Tai Chi Sword (Taijijian) is an ancient healing practice created by Taoist monks as a spiritual practice for health and self-defence that advances your Qi training beyond the hand forms, into a beautiful series of techniques for health and energy extension. The Sword Foundation Course (20 hours) introduces the Fundamental 13 Sword Techniques, 13 Sword Forms and Sword Qigong for health and well-being. The intermediate course teaches the 32 Sword Forms (60 hours) which is a great set to accompany the 24 Hand Forms. More advanced is the Traditional Yang Tai Chi Sword 54 Forms (80 hours) and advanced sword training and partner exercises that release, circulate and extend internal energy for health or self-defence.

* All students should be experienced with the Hand Form and Tai Chi principles before advacncing to the sword. All students should start with 1 to 2 years practice of the Fundamental 13 Sword Techniques before moving on to advanced sword training.

Tai Chi Sword has developed its own path in internal martial arts in accordance with the principles of Tai Chi Chuan. It offers a valuable source of concepts to circulate and extend Qi for good health and meditation, and promotes the development and application of inner energy. The movements of the sword are bright and beautiful, upright and elegant; the momentum is light and agile, firm and steady with the Qi penetrating onto the sword. The connections are smooth and natural; the force is soft with hardness, and the speed is slow, tender and changeable. These flowing graceful movements merge the sword, body and mind into one.

The peaceful practice of Tai Chi Sword incorporates all the fundamental techniques of the hand forms and pushing hands, which is why it is not usually taught to beginners until they have a basic understanding and experience of Tai Chi. Your experience and level of training of the hand forms, qigong meditation or other physical/martial training will be extremely valuable. Sword students are first taught fundamental sword exercises to strengthen and prepare the mind and body for the Tai Chi Sword Form. Like practicing a bare hand sequence, you must learn to coordinate all the forms with deep gentle abdominal breathing until it occurs naturally with the expansion and contraction of the movement, the Yin and Yang phase of the form. The sword forms must be done slowly at first in order to get the fullness of this elegant and ancient weapon sequence. With patience and practice, the practitioner can make the Tai Chi Sword sequence a useful and beautiful series of techniques for health or defense.

For self-defence, due to the construction of the narrow blade and the techniques emphasized by Tai Chi stylists, there are several specialized methods for using the sword as a weapon, and depends on which part of the sword you use. The first third of the blade near the handle is thicker and stronger and used for blocking. The middle section of the blade is used for intercepting and sometimes cutting. But the third section of the blade towards the tip is thinner and weaker. It the sharpest and most dangerous part of the sword and is only used for cutting. The bottom of the handle, or pommel, can also be used for striking. These four sections of the sword are used in various combinations depending on how you move according to your opponent’s movements. Most of the motions are done with fluidity and extreme speed. But to properly use the Tai Chi Sword each movement is combined with the manifestation of qi known as jin at the point of contact. You must be capable of smooth inner structural locomotion and energy extention, which is traditionally perfected in the hand form before sword training can begin.

Course Information

TRAINING SCHEDULE
We specialize in Private Courses on the dates you come to Bali. You can have 1 or 2 people for this price but you need to bring your own friend/partner to accompany you. It is recommended to take 1 or 2 courses per year, but you can also take the 200 Hours 5-in-1 Private Course if you can focus your training for 6 weeks. All training takes place at the Tai Chi Bali Healing Arts Centre next to The Caz Bali Hotel in Desa Bengkel Kawan, near Tanah Lot, South Bali.
We have a large shaded area for Tai Chi & Qi Gong training and a large 2nd floor sun lounge for sunrise and sunset practice. All courses take place from Monday to Friday and must be completed within the specified number of days/weeks. All courses are 1-to-1 with British instructor Dave West. Due to the tropical heat we only practice 4 hours in the morning 9am-1pm, Monday to Friday, which is 20 hours training per week. There are no classes on Saturday and Sunday, which gives you time to rest and enjoy our Balinese culture and lifestyle.
ACCOMMODATION & MEALS
Transport, accommodation and meals are not included in the price. Please make your own arrangements according to your budget. The Caz Bali is the closest hotel, just 2 minutes walk to the Tai Chi Bali Centre. There are also several mid-range hotels in Kedungu, Tanah Lot and Yeh Gangga areas of South Tabanan, with prices ranging from USD 30 to USD 200 per night including breakfast, and a few budget hotels and homestay rooms from USD 15 to USD 30 per night with long stay discounts. Meals are generally inexpensive depending on local or western restaurants.
