Yang style Tai Chi Chuan (Yang Taijiquan) is the most popular of all Chinese martial arts, and is loved by millions of practitioners around the world. Rooted in Tao philosophy, health and self-defence, Yang Style Tai Chi is a great low impact exercise from ancient China for improving the flow of energy throughout the mind, body and spirit, leading to an overall sense of well being. This course explores the teachings of Grandmaster Yang Chengfu, one of the great Tai Chi pioneers of the early 20th century. Experience the principles of Tai Chi Chuan with moving meditation, focusing on developing the Ten Essential Principles of Yang Chengfu. The Traditional 85 Forms (which can also be counted as 88, 103, 108 or 150 depending on repetitions and style variations) harmonizes the mind and smoothes the Qi flow, repairing and strengthening the physical and energetic system for health and self-defence.
This private course is designed to help you study and practice the internal healing art Tai Chi Chuan which was originally created in a monastery by Taoist monks as a spiritual practice for health and self-defence. In perfecting these arts you develop your relationship with universal energy and the Tao, and in so doing begin to perfect yourself as a human being, healing your anger, hatred, greed, jealousy and worry, perfecting yourself on all levels. This is not just in the classroom, but also making gradual changes that have positive effects on your health, personality and lifestyle, developing loving kindness, wisdom and compassion. This is the deeper wisdom of Tai Chi as a spiritual practice and the ultimate goal of spiritual enlightenment. This is the way of Tai Chi.
TEN PRINCIPLES OF YANG CHENGFU
1. The spirit of vitality lifts the top of the head
2. Sink the shoulders and lower the elbows
3. Drop the chest and slightly round the upper back
4. Relax the waist and move from the center
5. Separate empty and full
6. Use intent rather than force
7. Synchronize upper and lower body
8. Match up inner and outer
9. Practice continuously and without interruption
10. Seek stillness within movement
The Ten Essential Principles of Yang Chengfu provide a framework for a lifetime of comprehensive study. In many ways they are like a formula or recipe for correct practice. Rather than a series of abstract concepts, the Ten Essential Principles are the summation of generations of inquiry into the nature of mind, body, and motion. Each principle is dynamically linked to a practical result, and when all the points are accurately represented, the outcome is the marvelous expression of grace, power and balance present in Traditional Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. This course will focus on providing a framework for the Tai Chi student to organize and work on the Ten Essential Principles. Each principle results in a practical refinement that gives a special quality to the performance. Rather than explaining the meaning of each point, these refinements in posture, motion and mental activity will be examined. What is of importance is that the principles enter one’s practice and affect the performance of the forms. The main point for practitioners is to follow the basic principles in a way that they are dynamically expressed in the whole body. They cannot remain disembodied ideas. Without these principles you will not succeed. Especially for the beginning student, this can seem a daunting task. Turning theories into practical experiences can take years of practice. Patience, perseverance, and an organized study plan can help with the complexity of Tai Chi’s many theoretical requirements.
The standard Yang set today is Yang Chengfu’s final revision of 85 postures, which he demonstrated in his book published in 1936. Most of the other books published since then, including many Western ones, are either variations or reflections of the author’s own personal expression of the set. One should note that right from its creation, Yang Taijiquan has always been combat-oriented. Yang Chengfu always emphasized that the set should be practiced with its martial applications in mind.

TRAINING SCHEDULE
We specialize in Private Courses on the dates you come to Bali. You can have 1 or 2 people for this price but you need to bring your own friend/partner to accompany you. It is recommended to take 1 or 2 courses per year, but you can also take the 200 Hours 5-in-1 Private Course if you can focus your training for 6 weeks. All training takes place at the Tai Chi Bali Healing Arts Centre next to The Caz Bali Hotel in Desa Bengkel Kawan, near Tanah Lot, South Bali.
We have a large shaded area for Tai Chi & Qi Gong training and a large 2nd floor sun lounge for sunrise and sunset practice. All courses take place from Monday to Friday and must be completed within the specified number of days/weeks. All courses are 1-to-1 with British instructor Dave West. Due to the tropical heat we only practice 4 hours in the morning 9am-1pm, Monday to Friday, which is 20 hours training per week. There are no classes on Saturday and Sunday, which gives you time to rest and enjoy our Balinese culture and lifestyle.
ACCOMMODATION & MEALS
Transport, accommodation and meals are not included in the price. Please make your own arrangements according to your budget. The Caz Bali is the closest hotel, just 2 minutes walk to the Tai Chi Bali Centre. There are also several mid-range hotels in Kedungu, Tanah Lot and Yeh Gangga areas of South Tabanan, with prices ranging from USD 30 to USD 200 per night including breakfast, and a few budget hotels and homestay rooms from USD 15 to USD 30 per night with long stay discounts. Meals are generally inexpensive depending on local or western restaurants.
